Corporate Rowing League

2017 Captains Manual

INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATION

Summer Corporate Rowing League

The Annual Summer Corporate Rowing season, as in past years, will provide a collegial forum to exercise on the water, improve rowing skills, network, eat and have fun. Summer highlights include opportunities to row against other organizations and the traditional post-practice feast (BBQ, beer and more), all included in the participation fee!

You will have the opportunity to bond with your co-workers and teammates while rowing on our three rivers as well as after rowing at the BBQ. Coaching is provided for all practices and safety will continue to be our number one priority while you are on the water. All levels of fitness are encouraged!

Fees

The fee for a team is $2,000. TRRA is asking all teams to collect fees from a minimum of ten individuals. TRRA recommends having at least 12 members and an absolute minimum of 10. Team members will have varying conflicts throughout the summer so there is a need for more than 8 on your team. Teams with 12-14 have been the most successful in fielding 8 rowers consistently each week in past years. Please read the section “What Happens with Extra Rowers?” below.

The fees must be paid at one time (by your first practice). The payments can be any combination of checks, cash, and credit card. TRRA asks that the captains collects the fees and hand them all in together. Any TRRA member with a boat and facility membership receives a $100 discount. Captains, please provide a roster (names and emails) with your payments! Waivers and swim tests will be turned in at the same time. TRRA requires a one-time swim test for anyone going on the water.

Captain Discount

TRRA requires that each team has a captain and there are many expectations for the captains (see the Captain’s Manual) in order for the team to get on the water smoothly. It is ultimately up to the team and the captain if they have enough for this to happen and if the captain feels comfortable with this arrangement.TRRA recommends the team captain is not included in the total of 10 rowers and does not pay the fee.

What Happens with “Extra” Rowers?

If your team has 10-12 rowers on your roster it is possible there will be a week that you have more than eight people available to row. We welcome you to bring all available rowers down to your practice. Here are some of the options the extra person has for that week (we recommend cycling through the “extra”). That person can:

1. See if another team is short a rower (this happens very frequently)
2. Use the indoor rowing machines and weight room we have at the boathouse
3 . Ride in a coach’s launch. You won’t believe how much you’ll learn by doing this until you’ve done it!
4 . Head out on the paths of our beautiful island (Washington’s Landing) by foot (walk/jog) and get ready for the BBQ early!

Events & Regattas (tentative)

Highmark Challenge – July 29th

Head of the Ohio – October 7th & 8th

Regatta fees not included in program cost. Dates and events will be announced during the program.

Coxswains

Some teams have their own coxswain, but we realize that many others do not. TRRA will provide a lengthy list of contacts for people who would be willing to cox for you.

Participant Criteria

Age: 21+
Skill Level: Beginner and Intermediate
Participation Level: Recreation and Fitness
Prerequisite (one time only): Swim Test
Prerequisite (req’d annually): TRRA Waiver

Practice Format

Team Numbers: Teams must bring at least 8 Rowers and 1 Coxswain each week. It is highly recommended that teams have 12 rowers to account for varying team member schedules during the summer.
Practices: Your team will select one night each week to practice. Practices will be coached. Teams are paired by experience for practice with two boats per coach. There will be a progressive curriculum that will account for the goals and overall experience level of participants. Bring water bottles!
Frequency: One night each week.
Attire: There is no need for special attire for rowing. It is recommended that shorts or sweats be relatively snug fitting as loose material easily catches in the rowing seat wheels. Bicycle shorts or tights are ideal. Any running shoes or sneakers will be fine. In cooler weather, we recommend a warm hat and wind-breaker.
Location: Unless otherwise announced, practices will be at the Lambert Boathouse on Washington’s Landing. Practices are rarely cancelled in inclement weather, but rather are moved inside to the ergs or to the Rowing Tanks at our Millvale Facility. There are showers and lockers at both boathouses.
BBQ: There will be a rower’s BBQ after every practice. Food and beverages (soda and beer) are included in the program fee. Traditionally one team accepts responsibility for cooking and cleaning up on a rotating basis.

All experience levels can sign up on any of the nights listed below.

Only your Captain should register! We will only allow six boats per session (because of safety and equipment limitations). First come first serve. Registration opens April 1.All experience levels can sign up on any of the nights listed below.  A $100 non-refundable deposit must be paid to complete the registration.  This fee will be applied to the final amount due before the first practice.

Unaffiliated individuals: Don’t have a team but still would rather row in our corporate program than one of our others? Please contact Corporate Rowing Coordinator, Megan Kuehm and she will attempt to find you a team (or start up a new team of all unaffiliated members). Please tell her your experience level and any preference for nights and sessions you are available.
