THREE RIVERS ROWING ASSOCIATION
Beginning in 2021, the Three Rivers Rowing Association’s First Row program is going to take a new, multi-entry point format designed to increase access, retention and maximize the opportunities and benefits of rowing at TRRA. This revised approach will focus on bringing rowing directly to Pittsburgh’s communities and work to pave roads from the communities we serve to our rowing campuses. These roads will be built with trust, familiarity, and a sense of purpose. By strategically approaching these access points, we believe that we can better serve more of Pittsburgh’s youth and their communities while increasing both the long-term impacts and opportunities that rowing provides.
FIRST ROW 2.0: First Row 2.0 will be an after school program that TRRA will bring to the schools and communities that we are serving. This program will combine physical fitness, fun and exercise with a custom curriculum designed to enhance the Social Emotional Learning development of all students. Over the course of 16 weeks during the spring semester (2 times per week), students will learn how to row on ergs, work as a team, develop goal setting skills, enhance communication & problem solving skills all in the comfort and familiarity of their school and neighborhood.
In its pilot year, TRRA plans to facilitate First Row 2.0 in partnership with the Pittsburgh Public Schools and two charter schools, effectively serving over 300 potential students in its first year!
Summer Camps @ TRRA: Summer is an incredible time to be outdoors and on the water here in Pittsburgh! Throughout the summer, TRRA is the host for multiple Youth Learn to Row Camps. The focus of these camps is to serve as an introduction to on-water rowing, creating new friendships and staying active. Participants will be taught the proper way to row on the water and indoors as well as boat-handling and rowing safety skills.
Our Youth Summer Camps are open to anyone that is entering 4th-12th grade from any school in the region. Each Learn to Row Camp runs for two weeks throughout the summer. Our vision is that students who participate in FR 2.0 will be motivated to pursue on-water rowing with our summer camps. Here, students from all different schools and backgrounds will be introduced to on-water rowing together and continue on a journey together that will (hopefully) last a lifetime!
Three Rivers Youth Rowing (TRYR): Three Rivers Youth Rowing program was formed in the fall of 2020 through the unification of the original First Row program and the Three Rivers Junior Rowing program. This unification ensures that all youth participants have equal access to all of the opportunities and experiences within the youth program.
TRYR operates throughout the school year and provides on-water training and racing opportunities for three teams that operate within the program. The TRYR Middle School Rowing program serves 4th - 7th grade students 2-3 days per week throughout the school year. The TRYR Novice program introduces rowing to 8th-11th grades who have no prior experience with the sport and practices up to 5 days per week. The TRYR Varsity program is for students in grades 8-12 with previous rowing experience and trains up to 6 days per week. All of these programs have dedicated coaches, custom age and skill appropriate training plans, and participate in multiple races and events throughout the year.
Our vision is that students who participate in First Row 2.0 and our Summer Camps continue their engagement with rowing and join one of the TRYR programs for the duration of their high school years and potentially into college and beyond! The skills, values and sense of community that are established by participating in our sport all lead to success, both on and off the water.
